Tim & Russell Excel in Recent Club Contest
Tuesday 3rd March was the date of our annual speech and evaluation contests. As expected, it proved to be a highly entertaining and close fought battle in which Past President Tim Rampton won the International Speech Contest and Current President Russell Streeter, won the evaluation contest. Both speakers now go on to represent the club at the Area 32 Contests on 21st March 2015 in the Fishbourne Centre, just outside Chichester.
INTERNATIONAL SPEECH CONTEST
We had three contestants vying for a place in the area contest. Tim Rampton, Rusell Streeter and Jewels Carter.
Tim's motivational speech was entitled "I am Responsible". In it he urged us to consider that maybe we were suffering frominverse paranoia - the irrational belief that everyone else was actually trying to HELP us.
Jewels Carter speech was entitled "The Outlook's Rosy". She shared some inspiring ideas on the effect of the way we see the world, beautifully illustrated with extracts from the eulogy she gave at her mother's funeral.
Russell's was our final speaker with a talk entitled "A Lesson for my Son" in which he told the nail-biting story of his attempt to get selected for the 2008 Olympics.
Four members entered the contest where they had the task of evaluating a seven-minute speech entitled "From Incompetence to Competence", delivered by our Area Governor Wendy Benson. After Wendy had finished, Jewels Carter, Steve Green, Russell Streeter and Elena Grigoriev had just five minutes to gather their thoughts. They were then brought back into the room, one at a time, to present their feedback to Wendy and the judges. All did a splendid job and Russell was judged the winner.
As previously mentioned, the winners will go on to represent Solent Speakers Club at the Area 32 contest in the Fishbourne Centre, Chichester PO18 8BE on Saturday 21st March between 1pm and 5pm.
All members and guest are invited to attend this FREE to support Tim and Russell. It is guaranteed to be a fabulous afternoon filled with entertainment and education (and delicious cakes in the interval!)
