7 December 2019 Meeting, Bishopstown Toastmasters

On 7 December 2019, we had yet another great meeting of Bishopstown Toastmasters.  The club President Anita Howard opened the meeting at 11.00 and handed it over to Toastmaster Damian Loftus, who carried out the role with great efficiency and thought.  He was supported by Christina Donaldson, who took on the role of Timekeeper for the first time and showed admirable resourcefulness and tact along with her businesslike approach.  Our Sergeant-at-Arms, Mary O’Shaughnessy, set the tone by reminding us all that “the best preparation for tomorrow is to do your best today!”

Harshika Pareek delivered the first prepared speech, a passionate and inspiring Icebreaker that took us from the heart of India through the pursuit of happiness to the achievement of speaking in public for the first time.  Anita Howard then delivered an interpretive reading of the Lady Anne scene from Shakespeare’s King Richard III, and finally Mary O’Shaughnessy, standing in at what was quite literally the last moment, gave us a wonderfully inventive and funny speech on ‘The marvellous, the miraculous ATM’.

Poetmaster Marie Broderick followed with an excellent reading of Pam Ayres’s ‘I Wish I’d Looked After Me Teeth’  -  a cautionary poem for this time of the year!  Kevin Walsh, as Topicsmaster, had thought very deeply about his topics, and encouraged people to give their ideas on such themes as the allocation of money to sport and Christmas sales prices.

Bernard Buckley set the tone for an uplifting General Evaluation session, with sincere, animated and encouraging evaluations from Bríd Flynn, Ros Longwill and Ronan Donovan and detailed and thoughtful reports from Pausemaster Carol O’Donovan and Grammarian Kay-Ti Tan, who was pleased to announce that her Word of the Day, ‘festive’, had been used 9 times.

All those who took on roles during the meeting carried them out excellently, and we particularly thank and commend those who took on roles for the first time.  Thanks also to everyone who attended, and to the staff of Bishopstown Library for their wonderful and patient support.

Our next meeting is on Saturday 14 December, at the usual time of 11 a.m.  If you can, please arrive a few minutes early.  As always, guests are cordially invited to attend.  Guests will not be called upon to deliver a speech or topic, but they are very welcome to participate in the Table Topics session by raising their hands.  Please note that the Library has asked the club not to enter the room before 10.45 a.m., and endeavour to abide by this request.

             See you all soon!
