Our Blog  (Bishopstown Toastmasters)
5 October 2019, Meeting, Bishopstown Toastmasters

On 5 October 2019 we had yet another great meeting of Bishopstown Toastmasters, holding the club contest in Humorous Speech and Table Topics.  The club President Anita Howard opened the meeting at 11 a.m., and chaired the contest.  Our four Humorous Speech contestants Murt Ó Súilleabháin, Damian Loftus, Ronan Donovan and Conor Donovan delighted the audience with their inventive and witty performances.  These were followed by our five Table Topics contestants Yasantha Chamara, Murt Ó Súilleabháin, Conor Donovan, Aisling Nestor and Ronan Donovan, who all gave their own highly individual and memorable interpretations of the topic.  Our congratulations to Murt Ó Súilleabháin, Conor Donovan and Ronan Donovan, who placed first, second and third respectively in the Humorous Speech contest, and to Murt Ó Súilleabháin, Aisling Nestor and Yasantha Chamara, who placed first, second and third respectively in the Table Topics contest.

The contest was, above all, a happy and vibrant event that showed the talent and teamwork in our club.  Our judges brought care, discretion and efficiency to the tough job of placing the contestants, and we particularly thank our guest judge Catherine Reidy, of Cork Douglas Toastmasters.  Thanks also to our counters, Marian O’Mahony and Noreen O’Sullivan, our contest timekeepers Josip dell’Olio and Bríd Flynn, and our Sergeants-at-Arms Bernard Buckley and Kay-Ti Tan, who kept the event running with humour and patience.  Our Topicsmaster Daragh Ó Donaile brought huge enthusiasm to his role, engaging the audience with questions that ranged from the merits of a moustache to response to recent commentaries on a ‘compo’ culture in modern society.  After the Table Topics competition he opened the contest topic to the audience, leaving everyone feeling completely involved and enthused by the event.

All those who took on roles carried them out excellently, and we particularly commend those who carried out roles for the first time  -  including Aisling Nestor and Yasantha Chamara, who were contesting at Bishopstown Toastmasters for the first time, with wonderfully accomplished performances!  Thanks also to everyone who attended, and to the staff of Bishopstown Library for their wonderful support.  We look forward to supporting our members at the Area Contest in the Oriel House Hotel, at 8 p.m. on 30 October 2019.

Our next meeting is on Saturday 12 October.  We will start at the usual time of 11 a.m.  If you can, please arrive a few minutes early.  As always, guests are cordially invited to attend.  Guests will not be asked to speak, but they are welcome to participate in the Table Topics session by raising their hands.  Please note that the Library has asked the club not to enter the room before 10.45 a.m., and endeavour to abide by this request.

            See you all soon!
