Area 4 Conference Update

Dear all,

I'm just back from this weekend's Toastmasters conference and am now a confirmed toastie junkie (I think I was only dabbling before). A weekend of brilliant and inspiring key note speeches and workshops, outstanding speech and evaluations contests, with just a dash of partying.

It was so good, I ordered the DVD which will include the keynote speeches and the contests - when I get it you're welcome to borrow, or maybe we'll have a video night!

News about people you may know
Chris Boden, fiancé of Thame Speakers' Helena Brewer (which really makes him one of us), won the evaluation contest. He was outstanding in the way he combined praise, tips and a touch of emotion.

At the division council the realignment proposal to create division J was approved, and I was voted in as next year's division governor. Ann Nunn was voted in as next year's division governor for division G.

The new district executive for 2011/2012 will be Jim Hegarty, Freddie Daniells (who visited Swan Speakers earlier this year), Luanne Kent and Hilary Briggs.

International Speech Contest and Young People
The international speech contest was won by a young man from London - Malachi Talabi. He described how he overcame bullying and used great skill, passion and presence to get his message across.

We also had speeches from young people who have competed in Jack Petchey's Speak Out Challenge - they were brilliant. If you want to find out more, or see them in action, go to the finals on the 8th July 2011 http://www.speakoutchallenge.com/pages/grandfinal/

Our incoming district governor, Jim Hegarty, set us a challenge - to bring on board the next generation of Toastmasters. How many of us wish we had joined up 10 years earlier? What could we have done with that? Lets get more young people involved!

Key Note Speakers and Workshops
We had international president Pat Johnson for the full weekend. She was a wonderful combination of inspiring, funny and down to earth. One of her messages was that if people bring you their problems, it's because you're being their leader - you're doing something right! She also said that DTM actually stands for 'Don't Time Me' which went down very well with the audience, if not the conference organisers!

We had world champion of public speaking Jim Key. One of his messages (in amongst lots of entertaining anecdotes) is that if you create your speeches so that they give something of value to your audience, then they will be all the more powerful. He also suggested that we video our speeches to work out how we can improve, but he had a word of advice - this only works if you actually watch the videos!

There were loads of workshops on subjects including getting people to interact with your speeches, being persuasive, using social media to promote your club. The one I enjoyed the most was Alan Donegan's 'have the audience rolling in the aisles', where he had us making up jokes on the fly, and using facial expressions to get a laugh.

Some reminders and updates
Our outgoing district governor, Teresa Dukes, reminded us that the year is not up yet! Lets keep growing and strengthening our clubs, encouraging people to achieve their awards - and recognising them for it.

We have new Toastmasters branding on the way in order to get a consistent brand internationally, and to bring it up to date. I expect it will mean us updating our promotional materials and websites amongst other things no doubt, and we will hear more about it in August.

The district council agreed to set up a group to explore reforming the district - because we are growing bigger and bigger, we are reaching a point where 1 district isn't going to be enough for the UK and Ireland, so that group will be exploring options - I expect there will be more news of that soon too.

Next conference
The next conference is going to be in Glasgow from the 11th to the 13th of November. http://flourish2011.co.uk/ We are promised humorous speech and table topics finals, ceilidh's and men in kilts.

I know of no other way of learning this much and having this much fun in one weekend. The more of us that are there, the more fun we'll have. See you there!

Jean
