Our Blog  (Aylesbury Speakers)
A third of the way through the year? Already?
Dear all,

We're over a third of the way through this Toastmasters year, so I think a bit of a catch up, and a sticking of dates into diaries, is in order.

The Wanderer Returns
Firstly, great news, Rose-Marie is back from the States so she rejoins Belinda as one of our Assistant Area Governors. Welcome back Rose-Marie!

Dublin Conference
Congratulations to Gill Hale who represented Division G in the District Table Topics Contest - she did a great job with the topic 'What will be your greatest gift to humanity?'. The ultimate winner was David Jones who gave a tongue in cheek response 'My Genes!'

The humorous speech contest was won by Adam Broomfield-Strawn with a hilarious cradle to grave journey entitled 'Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana'

The keynote speech was by Sean Kennedy who talked about his work delivering public speaking training for young people through SpeakersBank, and being series consultant on the TV programme 'The Speaker'. He gave an inspirational speech about how much Toastmasters has to offer young people.

DCP
Each club is doing really well on achieving goals. So far, Aylesbury and Berkhamsted have already 4 DCP points, Berkhamsted have 7 new members and Aylesbury and Vale have 4 each. Thame has already achieved its AC goals and Swan Speakers is born, with 26 members joined up since it launched in September. Well done all!!

Supporting Each Other
We've talked at presidents' meetings and officer training about supporting each others clubs - if you've any time to support other clubs, particularly those with a smaller membership base, please go along and attend the odd meeting.

Club Officer Training
The next club officer training will be on the evening of the 3rd of February in Leighton Buzzard (details to follow). I really believe that this training is an opportunity for each officer team, and the whole area team, to regroup, think through ideas on how to make our clubs even more successful, and to succession plan. We got really good feedback on how well the training went the last time, and I will be sending out a survey soon to get your views on what you want from the next one.

For our area's club officer training to really achieve it's aim, I think we would have every one of our club officers attending (not just enough to get over the DCP bar). So, as a little encouragement, I'm offering a bottle of Champaigne to every club that sends their full club officer team to the training.

International Speech and Evaluation Contests

Some more dates for your diaires;
- Area contest : 5th April, Berkhamsted
- Division contest : 16th April, Cambridge Golf and Conference Centre, Huntingdon. PE28 9HQ

'London' Conference - 6th to 8th May 2011
is actually being held in Old Windsor, just down the road. Want to hear some fantastic speeches, evaluations, workshops and have a bit of 'craic'? Sounds like a worthwhile trip, even if it is only for the UK and Ireland International Speech Final on the 7th.

Something Special
Each club has done, or is doing, something special. Vale is working on producing a CD of children's stories in different languages and ran a brilliant open evening last month. Aylesbury sponsored Swan Speakers and Youth Training at the Grange School. Berkhamsted ran a kids storytelling tent at a local fete and is actively sponsoring Cornerstone Speakers. Thame sponsored Swan Speakers and is planning more work with local charities to help them with promotions. And Swan Speakers chartered in record time, and has already run a workshop with county councillors to help them handle questions and answers.

I genuinely feel very fortunate to be working with such an enthusiastic and successful set of clubs - thank you all!

Cheers
Jean
