A Rhapsodic event - Lee Valley Speakers Open Meeting

A wonderful event took place at the Castle Hotel on March 6th which was the 'Talk of Macroom'.

It was the Open Meeting of the Lee Valley Speakers.

Existing members were joined by visiting Toastmasters from other clubs and it was really wonderful to welcome many new guests for the evening.

In the previous week, there were social media postings, Lee Valley Outlook printed a press release and with days to go a mass saturation leaflet drop took place through the town.  Lee Valley Speakers really were and are the 'Talk of the Town'.  Smile

On arrival to the meeting, a warm welcome was extended to all by the club President Moira O'Brien.  Guests were put at ease and encouraged to settle in,  sit back and enjoy the entertainment of the evening - with no pressure on them to speak.

How encouraging it was during the meeting to see many of the guests put their hands up to offer a few words in response to our table topics session.  That was the measure of an excellent host of Table Topics on the night,  Christine Murphy.  Well done Christine on a wide and enjoyable light-hearted variety of topics that got us all speaking.

Two speeches were delivered by Margaret Lucey and Ted Mellamphy.

Margaret's speech took us on a descriptive journey of what it was like for the Teacher (herself) now to be a student at an evening class and have time for herself while learning the art of baking. Margaret's humor was evident throughout the speech.

Ted entertained us with a speech titled Men's and Women's brains.  Highly entertaining and with props.  For any who missed it, he has promised to deliver it again later in the year.

Speech evaluators for the evening were Toastmaster Michael Lynch and visiting Toastmaster Maura Meaney.  Both Toastmasters offered excellent evaluations which were encouraging and very positive to the speakers.

Our Ah Counter was Matt Murphy who kept a keen ear on the filler words used during the night.

Peter Neville our timer made sure that we kept to time throughout the meeting,  as time is precious to us all.

Nicola Hogan our Grammarian introduced us to the Word of the Day - Rhapsodic and indeed this wonderful event was Rhapsodic and also very encouraging to see this great community coming together to share a couple of hours and get to know new friends and old alike in a relaxed yet motivated environment.

This meeting was hosted by our President and Toastmaster for the evening Moira O'Brien who ensured it was an occasion that will be remembered for a very long time.  Well done Moira.

To experience the encouraging atmosphere at Lee Valley Speakers and see what it can offer you,  call to our next meeting on March 20th in the Castle Hotel at 8 p.m.
