Triumph and success

With the Toastmaster year coming to a close our meeting incorporated the club AGM to a good audience of members and guests.

Amonn Al-Mahrouq opened the meeting as Sergeant at Arms with the usual housekeeping rules, before welcoming our Toastmaster for the evening Wendy Benson to the lectern.

Wendy explained the night’s programme before opening the Annual General Meeting. In her report she explained that the club had enjoyed an incredibly successful year, evidenced by an increase in membership. She referred to changes to the structure of the meetings, with many now hosting four speakers.

Ray Adams, VP Education, had given his apologies but Wendy read out his report in which he was happy to report more members were using Easyspeak to book roles and speech slots. We could also anticipate having 8 out of 10 points in the Distinguished Club Programme, and would be aiming for 9 points next year.

Ann Carver, VP Membership, referred to her role in encouraging guests to join and supporting new members.

Finally Brent Crouch, Treasurer, explained that our financial situation was very healthy indeed, aided by low room rentals and high membership.

With the reports given Wendy reported the names of those standing for office. In the absence of any contested posts the new committee was voted in en bloc.

Committee 2016-17: President: Simon Roberts; Treasurer: Brent Crouch; VP Education: Amonn Al Mahrouq; Secretary: Steph Norman; Sergeant at Arms: Aaron O’Sullivan. The positions of VP Membership and VP Publicity remained vacant.

With the AGM out of the way we reverted to our normal agenda. Claire Lay was Timekeeper and explained her use of the lights to keep us to time. Carolyn Barber was Grammarian and in keeping with the theme of Success, gave the word of the evening as Triumph. She would be looking for good arrangements of words and grammatical excellence.

Wendy now called on Alison Cross to lead the warm up. Picking up on the theme she asked those present to define their understanding of success. All participated and suggestions included getting tasks completed, overcoming obstructions, being happy and healthy and getting through the day.

It was now time to move to the prepared speeches. First up was Brent with his Project 8 speech using powerpoint entitled “To Brexit or not to Brexit”. Although it was Project no 8 it was in reality Brent’s tenth speech concluding his Competent Communication Manual.

Ann Carver followed with a folk tale about The Banshee, and how she had visited a relative.

Amonn delivered the final speech, being his Project 2 speech, “Breaking Barriers” and how we should all be familiar with Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

We were now overrunning on time so Wendy asked those present to grab a cup of tea and return promptly.

The evaluations were given by Keith Oliver, Simon Roberts and Sarah Waters.

Ellie Zheleva had had to leave early so Wendy put her question as Table Topics Master. The question was to name a successful person and why. Steph Norman nominated the Queen, Sarah Stoneman proposed Victoria Wood, Sue, a guest, proposed Beethoven and finally Matt Roseblade put forward Hugh Laurie.

Carolyn returned to give her Grammarian’s report, followed by Matt Roseblade as General Evaluator.

Amazingly we had caught up on time and it just fell to Wendy to present the ribbons and awards before closing the meeting.
