An alluring White Day

It was another well attended meeting with a clutch of guests to see in March.

Sarah Waters opened the meeting as Sergeant at Arms before handing over to Alison Cross who was Toastmaster for the evening.

Alison welcomed all present and advised that we were trying a new format with Table Topics being moved to the first half of the meeting and the speeches and evaluations to the second half.

Alison then advised that theme she had chosen was White Day, the 14th March being a Japanese custom when men give gifts to their wives and girlfriends.

She introduced Tricia Jones who was in control of the timing, who explained how the lights worked.

Next was Marie Newman who as Grammarian explained that she would be looking for filler words and examples of good English. Her word for the evening was ‘alluring’, meaning mysteriously attractive or seductive.

Alison moved the meeting on to Table Topics and asked Wendy Benson to set the questions. Taking White Day as her theme Wendy asked for best gifts given and received, and then with a nod to the end of the month asked about Easter eggs. The change in the running order gave more time for impromptu speaking with seven volunteers taking part: Matt Roseblade, Steph Norman, Steven Okonkwo, Carl (guest), Brent Crouch, Phoebe (guest) and Tricia Jones.

Once the votes had been cast for best Table Topics speaker we moved to the break.

Sarah Waters called the meeting back for the second half and Alison called on the respective evaluators to introduce the speakers. Ray Adams kicked off with his speech conquering the Cold Call – “Xeroxed”, in which he explained the art of cold calling followed by some role play with Ann Carver. Ellie Zheleva followed with her Project 3 speech “What’s your excuse?” exhorting those present to just do it. Finally Juliette Scott gave her Icebreaker with “What exactly is a legal translator?” explaining her job.

There was just time for the vote for best speaker before the evaluators, Brent Crouch, Wendy Benson and Keith Oliver gave their assessments of the three speakers.

Marie Newman was called back to the lectern to give her Grammarian’s report, indicating that there were few filler words used during the evening and highlighting good examples of language which had been utilised.

Once the vote for Best Evaluator had taken place Ann Carver was called on to give the General Evaluation.

With the agenda complete it was only let for Wendy Benson to deal with club business and give out the awards. After asking for comments from the guests she closed the meeting.

Best Speaker – Ellie Zheleva

Best Evaluator – Wendy Benson

Best Table Topics – Steph Norman
