Devil may Care for Dickens's birthday

We opened our meeting by welcoming two new members: Matt Roseblade and Clare Lay.

Ray Adams did the honours as Sergeant at Arms welcoming everyone to the meeting and dealing with the general housekeeping before introducing Wendy Benson as Toastmaster.

Wendy set out for the benefit of old and new members the protocols and how the meeting would run. She also advised that that weekend had been the 204th birthday of Charles Dickens who had been born in Portsmouth. She praised his use of language and how he could implant a scene in your mind with a careful choice of words and characters. He had coined the phrase “devil-may-care” meaning careless, which had been set as our word of the evening.

Wendy now invited Premraj Premprakash to explain the use of the lights which he did clearly and succinctly.

Karen Chapman was to be Grammarian but had been delayed in traffic, so Brent Crouch took over advising that he would be looking out for the word of the evening, as well as examples of good and bad language.

Next Sarah Waters was asked to lead the warm up. Sarah had chosen “Great Expectations” and asked those present what their expectations were in Toastmasters. Several chose personal milestones in completing speech and leadership manuals, some were anticipating doing their ice breakers while others were seeking to help others on their paths.

Wendy now introduced our main speakers. First up was Charlotte O’Driscoll on her second project with a literary theme of War and Peace, and informed the audience of the life of Leo Tolstoy. Ray Adams followed with an advanced speech “The Effective Salesperson” setting out the key factors in making a sale, following this up with some role play with Simon Roberts as the unwitting customer. Finally Ellie Zheleva had the audience spellbound as she explained how she had abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in her Project 4 speech.

Following the voting for best speaker it was time for our customary break.

We returned for the evaluations given by Simon Roberts, Keith Oliver and Sophy Smith respectively.

Wendy was now pleased to introduce Andy Hammond from Arun Speakers who updated us on the Revitalised Education Program. Andy explained that Toastmasters proposed a radical change to its education programme with 5 tracks being personalised to fit the needs of members. The programme would be rolled out worldwide over the next two years. The details were still being worked on but members’ questions would be fed back to TMI and further updates provided.

With time at a premium Table Topics led by Ann Carver were curtailed. Aaron O’Sullivan explained when he most felt himself, Simon Roberts explained his blessings in life and Matt Roseblade informed us of what he would stop doing to improve himself.

Brent now stepped up to give his Grammarian’s report picking up on the large number of filler words but also highlighting the use of good language throughout.

Ian Millen had the task of evaluating the Table Topic speakers and gave advice and insights to each of the participants.

Finally Carolyn Barber gave the General Evaluator’s report and confirmed that it had been a very enjoyable evening.

Wendy gave out the Club Business, reporting back on the recent committee meeting, before handing out the awards.

Best Speaker – Ellie Zheleva

Best Evaluator – Simon Roberts
