An Inaugural Entrance

It was almost standing room only as we kicked off 2016 in style. The meeting was held for the first time in the smaller room at St Lukes.

Premraj Premprakash opened the meeting as Sergeant at Arms before inviting Club President Wendy Benson to welcome everyone and wish everyone a happy new year.

Keith Oliver then took over as Toastmaster advising of changes to the agenda and explained the Toastmaster programme for the benefit of members and guests. He also explained the theme of the meeting was Entrance. January is believed to be named after the god Janus, god of openings and closures, beginnings and ends and hence doorways and opportunities.

He next introduced his team starting with Tricia Jones who had taken on the role of Timekeeper. Tricia explained the timings for speeches and how she would indicate each phase by the lights. Her job was to ensure the meeting finished on time.

Sarah Waters was then asked to explain her role as Grammarian. She started by introducing her word of the evening ‘inaugural’ meaning to cause to begin. She then advised she would be looking for both good and bad language throughout the evening.

With the explanations out of the way Keith called on Ray Adams to lead the warm up giving everyone chance to participate. Ray had picked up on the theme of the evening and asked those present what ‘doors’ they would be opening in the coming year. A couple mentioned how they needed to fix the doors on their houses, but most looked to make changes. Ideas were to see things through the other person’s perspective, to be receptive to change, to do things they enjoyed and to open doors for the disadvantaged.

With everyone participating and in a receptive mood Keith invited Wendy Benson to set out the objectives for and to introduce the first speaker, Sophy Smith. Sophy was giving her Icebreaker entitled “A Life of Learning”. Sophy rattled off her educational attainments, and concluded that she now wished to improve her speaking skills.

Ellie Zheleva introduced Rosalie Cattermole doing her Project No 2 with “The Point of the Girls’ Network Charity” explaining how the charity mentored girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Finally Charlotte O’Driscoll welcomed Marie Newman to the floor with her Project 5 speech “The Charismatic You!” on how to raise your charisma.

Following the vote for Best Speaker it was time for our networking break.

After the break Keith invited Wendy, Ellie and Charlotte to give their respective evaluations

It was now time for Table Topics given by Alison Cross. Alison reminded the meeting of the recent bad news stories and wished to raise some lighter stories which had made the papers. Hence Keith spoke on Piers Morgan, Ray Adams spoke about the curative powers of honey and Steph, a guest, had the world’s largest halibut. Ian Miller described why flu victims should be incarcerated, Brent Crouch grappled why a giant’s arm had crushed a car and finally Simon Roberts spoke of a 6 inch alien found in Chile.

Keith now asked Sarah to give her Grammarian’s report. Sarah was pleased to note that the word of the evening had been used by several of those present, and highlighted examples of ‘Pompey-ism’s filler words used as well as some of the pleasant phrases during the evening.

Ann Carver gave the last of the evaluations giving comments and advice to the Table Topics contestants.

With the votes cast and counted Keith called on Brent Crouch to give his General Evaluation. Brent considered the change of room a success, which was quickly agreed by those present. He then proceeded to give advice to those who had participated and not already evaluated with various insights and suggestions for improvement.

The meeting was now drawing to a close and Ray Adams did the honours in handing out the awards, and also club bags to new members. This was followed by numerous photos of the winners and a group shot.

Best Speaker – Sophy Smith

Best Evaluator – Ann Carver

Best Table Topics – Ian Millen
