Winter Hibernation

It was another excellent turn-out as we welcomed our newest member Rosalie Cattermole to our last meeting in November.

Alison Cross opened the meeting with a bubbly welcome as Sergeant-at-Arms before introducing our Toastmaster for the evening, Ann Carver.

Ann explained how Toastmasters worked before advising that the theme for the evening was Winter and interspersed the proceedings with the participants thoughts on winter.

She then introduced her team starting with Sarah Waters, who was controlling the lights as Timekeeper. Sarah explained how she would time the various parts of the meeting and showed how she would control this by the use of the lights.

Keith Oliver was next up as Grammarian and he introduced the word of the evening ‘Hibernate’ from the Latin hibernare meaning to over-winter, but nowadays also meaning to close down for a period of time. He further explained he would be looking for good and bad examples of language.

Ann then called on Sophy Smith to lead the warm-up so everyone present could participate and be relaxed for the events to come. Sophy picked up on the theme of the evening and asked what people liked about winter. The audience was equally split between those who enjoyed n outside and those who wished to be beside a warming fire or even abroad in a hot climate. One e professed to enjoying standing barefoot on frosty grass.

We now moved on tot eh prepared speeches, which were introduced by the respective evaluators. First up was Rosalie with her Icebreaker, as she explained her fear of public speaking and why she had joined Toastmasters. She was followed by Karen Chapman with her Project 3 speech on Continual Professional Development, giving a bewildering array of personal goals both in her work and social life.

Last but not least was Marie Newman with her Project 4 speech “A Recipe for Sleeping Rough in Essex” relating the tale of visiting a friend only to find herself locked out of the flat.

Ann now called the first half of the meeting to a close for the usual drinks and nibbles during the break.

Alison called us back to our chairs for the second half and Ann started by asking for the evaluations, ably provided by Ray Adams, Carolyn Barber and Charlotte O’Driscoll. Among the points picked up on was the good use of signposting and eye contact, the enthusiasm of the speakers and a call for action.

Wendy Benson was next called on to provide the Table Topics. Wendy asked participants to explain why they would include lines from other songs in their own song. Lines such as “Our House”, The sun has got his hat on”, It has to be love, love, love” and My heart goes Boom, bang-a-bang” tested the speakers and got the audience laughing.

With the speeches and Table Topics it was time to conclude the evaluations. Keith gave his Grammarian’s report thanking those who had used the work hibernate and picking up on some of the triads used and the use of picture painting. He also highlighted some of the filler words and local idioms that members should seek to avoid.

Brent Crouch followed up with the Table Topics Evaluation, which he explained was doubly difficult due to the number of participants and length of the lyrics given. He however gave a good evaluation of each of the speakers.

It now only fell to Ian Millen to give the General Evaluation. He gave good advice for those having taken roles and made some pertinent comments about the lack of heating, the need for the guests to be formally welcomed from the lectern, and suggested that the Sergeant at Arms or another person should collect the ballot slips rather than the timekeeper.

Wendy Benson as Club President announced the club business, highlighting that our meeting in December would be a social event rather than the usual meeting. She then presented the awards before formally closing the meeting.
