Our Blog  (Spinnaker Speakers)
Progressing to Fruition

It was 3, 2, 1 for our November meeting as we welcomed 3 new members – Aaron O’Sullivan, Alison Cross and Prem Premprakash, enjoyed 2 Icebreakers and had one great meeting.

Michael John Smithson opened the meeting welcoming a good turn out of members and guests, and providing the usual housekeeping rules before introducing our Toastmaster for the evening, Brent Crouch.

Brent opened by going through the protocols before asking Simon Roberts to explain his role as Timekeeper. Simon gave a professional summary of the role of the Timekeeper and the importance of timing, before explaining the use of the lights. Simon was supported by his daughter Maria.

Brent now called Wendy Benson to the lectern who as Grammarian explained her role was threefold: to identify “grim grammar” to highlight “good grammar” and to set the word of the evening, which was ‘Fruition’ meaning accomplishment.

With his team in place Brent now called on Karen Chapman to set the warm-up. Karen picked up on the theme of Progress and asked those present to complete the sentence “I’m pleased I joined Toastmasters because …” Offerings included that it stopped me shaking, made me comfortable to speak before large groups of people, improved speaking skills and even helped get a job.

The audience was now ready for the prepared speeches and it was good to see our newer members take centre stage. First up was Ellie Zheleva with her Project 2 speech “Take time to make time” explaining how you should manage your time and allow time for things you like to do.

Charlotte O’Driscoll followed with her Icebreaker “So what is wrong with not talking” with an homage to her father. Finally Sarah Waters gave her Icebreaker entitle “Values” about her values for life.

All the speeches were of a high quality and the audience had plenty to think about and discuss in the network break.

We returned for the evaluations, ably given by Michael John, Marie Newman and Ann Carver, each indicating their speakers’ strengths and also offering helpful tips for improvement.

Brent now called on Keith Oliver to lead the Table Topics. Keith explained how it was important to practice impromptu speaking and again picking up on the theme of Progress invited participants to imagine they were promoting their invention in front of the Dragon’s Den, in this case the audience. Their inventions were the greatest inventions from history, including the wheel, fire, the printing press, the internet, refrigeration and one from the future.

It was good to see all three new members taking part and providing a high standard of presentation.

With Table Topics over Brent called Wendy back to give her Grammarian’s report. Wendy picked up on some of the filler words used, and reminded us of some of the phrases and picture painting use throughout the evening which enlivened the language. She also commended those who had used the word of the evening.

Charlotte O’Driscoll gave the table Topics evaluation with a reminder of each speaker’s presentation and an emphasis on what each had done well.

Brent now called on Ray Adams to give the General Evaluation emphasising how it was good to see so many signing up early and taking part.

It fell to Wendy Benson to give the club business and to welcome our three new members and to present them with their club bags.

Michael John closed the meeting after handing out the ribbons and awards and asking those guests present how they had found the meeting.

Best Speaker – Ellie Zheleva
