Name that Goal

For our second meeting in October we held an education night hosted by Ann Carver and Ray Adams.

We again had a good attendance with members, guests and returning guests.

Sarah Waters got us underway as Sergeant at Arms, dispensing a warm welcome amongst the usual housekeeping information before introducing our Toastmaster for the evening Karen Chapman.

Karen explained the protocols and advised our meeting was not the usual format, before introducing Brent Crouch as Timekeeper. Brent explained the working of the lights in a clear and professional manner.

To entertain the audience and encourage participation Karen now called on Carolyn Barber to host the warm-up, Carolyn advised that she was terrible at remembering names and asked every to give some information about their names so she could remember them better. Reasons for being given certain names, or not being given them followed, meanings as well as humorous stories associated with them.

Karen now called on Ann Carver to give the first part of the night’s education. Ann explained that as a coach it was her job to help people find their own answers not to tell them. She used the example of an orange asking each person to give one aspect they associated with an orange. Ann pointed out that every answer was correct, and was personal to each person.

Ann then told how even when the orange was old and shrivelled it still contained the seeds of new growth.

Ann progressed to asking those present to mark their Toastmaster abilities between 1 and 8, and to plot these on a circle. This identified areas for growth. From this each person was asked to identify 3 goals to address those areas needing attention.

It was time for a break with lots for the audience to discuss and consider before returning for the second half.

Karen invited Ray Adams to speak on setting goals. Ray explained the need to set goals and how these needed to be SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and with a set time.

Wendy Benson gave the club business before closing the meeting.
