A Couthy Meeting

Another good turn out of members and guests marked our first meeting in September after our break in August due to weather having put paid to our ‘Speech on the Beach’ event for the second year running.

Ann Carver opened the meeting as Sergeant at Arms and introduced Michael John Smithson as Toastmaster for the evening. Michael John welcomed all to Portsmouth and despite recent weather reminded us all of how fortunate we were to live in an area with such a moderate climate.

He asked Keith Oliver as Timekeeper to explain the role of Timekeeper, before calling on Ann Carver as Grammarian to explain her role. Ann introduced the word ‘Couthy’ meaning friendly and comfortable. She also advised she would be looking out for good and bad use of language.

The lectern now passed to Marie Newman as Warm-Up Master. Marie advised that as the Queen had recently become the longest serving monarch she felt she needed a break and was looking for someone to step in for her for a day but needed to know what they would do.

Members and guests responded with thoughts of seeing the best shows and sporting events, trying on the crown jewels, travelling in the state coach, and walking the corgis.

With the audience now suitability attentive Michael John called forth the speakers, each introduced by their evaluator.

Karen Chapman opened with her Project 2 speech – “Grow Your Own” extolling the virtues of growing your own fruit and vegetables, with examples of growing her own chillis. She was followed by Carolyn Barber who gave some anecdotes of her recent trip to Denver in her Project 3 speech “The Mile High City”. Finally Wendy Benson gave an after dinner speech from the Entertaining Speaker manual at the 25th anniversary of Spinnaker Speakers entitled “To Sleep, or not to Sleep”

After the usual voting we retired for our break and a chance to reflect upon the speeches.

Time as usual flew and we soon resumed to hear the evaluations given by Ray Adams, Marie Newman and Sandra Rampton (Arun Speakers) respectively. A common theme was the need for signposting to help the audience follow the speeches.

It was time now to enjoy the Table topics hosted by Simon Roberts. Simon explained he was presenting an awards ceremony and called on several of those present to give their acceptance speech. ‘Winners’ were Sandra Rampton – Fishmonger of the Year, Bill (guest) – Bailiff of the year, Mirror Tester – Priscilla (guest), Hot Air Balloon Seller – Keith Oliver, Baker – Sarah (guest) and finally Penetration Tester of the year – Ray Adams.

It now only fell for the final evaluations given by Ann Carver as Grammarian and Charlotte O’Driscoll who evaluated the Table Topics speakers.

Keith Oliver wrapped up the evaluations with the General Evaluators report.

Wendy Benson as Club President reminded members or next meeting was the Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests. She also presented the club with its Distinguished Club ribbon for its achievements in 2014-15

Michael John Smithson handed out eh awards and sought feedback from our guests, before closing the meeting.

Best Speaker – Wendy Benson

Best Evaluator – Sandra Rampton

Best Table Topics – Priscilla (guest)
