Friendships in Amity-ville

We were pleased to welcome Amonn Al-Mahrouq as our latest member as well as a gaggle of new and returning guests.

Marie Newman was Toastmaster for the evening and after the usual protocols and welcomes explained her theme for the evening was Friendship, which she thought resonated well with Toastmasters, a theme that was to be carried on throughout the evening.

Ellie Zheleva as Timekeeper and explained her role and the importance of keeping to time before Brent Crouch as Grammarian picked up the them introducing the word 'amity' meaning friendship. He then advised he would be looking out for examples of good and bad language.

Marie then asked Keith Oliver to lead the warm up. Keith picked up on the theme and asked those present to consider what a good friend exhibited to them. Amongst the offerings were someone to confide in, someone who would laugh at your jokes, someone who was there through thick and thin and someone you might not see for a while but who you could relate to once you met again.

We moved next to the speeches. Simon Roberts gave his Project 2 speech “How to avoid Cowboy Builders” setting out a number of tips to finding an honest builder, before Ann Carver, assisted by Wendy Benson, gave her talk from the Interpersonal Communication manual “Assertive at Work” on how to get one's point across without being aggressive.

After the voting for Best Speaker we moved to our network break.

Marie opened the second half and called on Keith Oliver and Michael John Smithson for their evaluations. Both used the 3 things you did well, two areas for improvement and 1 thing to take away approach, highlighting examples from the speeches.

Marie then called on Karen Chapman to lead the Table Topics, which was on the subject of famous friends with members and guests asked to describe their friendship with famous personalities such as Tom Jones, Albert Einstein, David Beckham, Elvis, and George Clooney amongst others. Subjects that led to many insights into past lives and general humour.

Marie brought the meeting back to order and asked for the Grammarian's report which Brent gave highlighting the many examples of good language and noting that the use of filler words was again low.

Wendy Benson followed with her evaluation of the Table Topics with a good mixture of praise and suggestions for improvement for all the contestants.

Once again the post of General Evaluator had not been filled and we again sought comments from those present. As usual there was a feeling that the meeting had been enjoyable and welcoming. A note of concern from one of the guests was the acoustics of the room and it was suggested that we consider the use of microphones.

With the main part of the meeting over Wendy Benson stepped up as Club President to give the club business before Michael John gave out the awards and closed the meeting.

Best Speaker – Ann Carver

Best Evaluator – Wendy Benson

Best Table Topics – Jo (guest)
