Golden Evaluations

Our second meeting in June was a break from the norm with our Annual General Meeting and an Evaluation workshop taking centre stage.

Ray Adams was our Toastmaster for the evening having the unenviable task of trying to control a flexible meeting as no-one was too sure how the timings would break down. In this he was ably assisted by Ann Carver who took on the role of Timekeeper.

Before starting he welcomed Anna Foley who was visiting as a guest.

With Ann having given a resume of her role of Timekeeper Ray called on Marie Newman to lead the warm up. Marie asked those present if they could have one gift, other than money, to help them fulfil their goals this year what would it be? Options given included a statue of Martin Luther King for inspiration, time, a robot to do the housework, memory, and chartered club

Ray now passed the lectern to Keith Oliver to run the AGM. Keith thanked the outgoing committee for their hard work in helping the club through its first full year as a Chartered Toastmaster club. It had been a year of stability with the club again achieving Distinguished Club status. He threw down the challenge to the incoming committee to drive the club forward both in numbers and success.

Brent Crouch followed with the Treasurer's report, confirming the club was in the black. He indicated that it had been agreed to move the date for payment of fees although it would still be £8 per month which all agreed was excellent value for money.

Wendy Benson then reported on various publicity undertaken over the past year, including regular articles in The News, before Michael John Smithson as VP Ed reminded members to plan their speeches and to ask him if in doubt over any matters.

There then followed the election of the incoming committee. As there were no contested positions the committee was voted in en bloc.

With the AGM concluded Ray called on Brent Crouch to give us a talk on Effective Evaluations. Brent went though what makes a good evaluation and gave several hints and tips how to give an encouraging but insightful evaluation.

Wendy Benson followed with two videos. The first was of John Webber's winning speech of 2013, highlighting many of the things Brent had alluded to. She then followed up with a lady giving her icebreaker speech and asked members to evaluate it.

Before they could it was time for our usual break giving members and guest time to chat and reflect on what they had learnt.

The meeting resumed and Wendy asked for volunteers to evaluate the speech. Ann Carver, Karen Chapman and Brent Crouch took up the challenge, with a discussion around the room on how well each had done.

Time as ever brought a close to the meeting leaving Keith Oliver to remind members of the forthcoming club meetings, committee meeting and Club officer training.

Before the meeting formally closed Wendy Benson indicated there was one award to be made and presented Keith with his certificate on achieving Advance Communicator Gold.
