A Cacoethes for Spring

We welcomed Ellie Zheleva, who joined prior to the meeting, Andrew Reed and Ravi a Toastmaster from ADP Hyderabad Toastmasters Club in Area 41 (India).

With a full agenda it promises to be a great evening and so it proved. Ann Carver was our Toastmaster for the evening and got us underway in a warm and bubbly style reflecting her theme for the evening of Spring/ It was a theme she kept coming back to by asking each person taking a role what Spring meant to them.

She called on Sophia Roberts to explain her role as Timekeeper, which she did clearly and professionally. Ann then took the opportunity to explain the protocols of handshaking and clapping to show support and build confidence.

Ray Adams was next called to the lectern as Grammarian and set out what he would be looking for, both good and bad, and gave the word of the evening 'Caoethes' meaning an uncontrollable urge or desire.

Ann next called on Simon Roberts to get the meeting proper underway with a warm up. Picking up on the political hustings in the run up to the election he asked what members would like t see or hear from candidates. Suggestions ranged from candidates wearing onesies, to hugs after derogatory comments, as well as a requirement to take truth serum and making something practical out of odds and ends.

With everyone now suitably amused Ann called for the prepared speeches, to be given by Brent Crouch, Ray Adams and Keith Oliver. Brent started with his project 10 speech, “Why are we here?” exhorting members to put themselves forward for speeches.

Ray Adams followed with a speech using Powerpoint called “What Language” explaining the computer language CoBoL.

Keith Oliver closed the speeches with an entertaining speech entitled “Sun, Sea and Sin” recollecting a holiday where he inadvertently drank alcohol free beer for the first couple of days.

With the votes cast Ann invited members and guests to enjoy the teas and coffees during the network break.

We returned for the evaluations. Ann called Marie Newman, Wendy Benson and Allan Wadsworth to give their thoughts on their respective speakers. All followed the questioning in the manuals rather than a more structured approach.

The tempo of the meeting now changed as Ann called on Michael John Smithson to lead the impromptu speaking in Table Topics. Michael John had brought a range of items which he asked the participants to explain.

Simon Robert selected a lemon holder, reflecting on how when one goes on a diet people offer food, and opining he should fill his fridge with lemons to keep to his diet. Ellie Zheleva followed with a decorating tool, advising how she went to shops knowing he tools she wanted but finding they never stocked just what she wanted. Ravi was called upon to talk about a fork and bemoaned how chicken in England tasted different to how he was used to it in India. Finally Marie selected a mirror, but no ordinary mirror for it made its owner appear beautiful but anyone else who used it short and dumpy.

Charlotte O'Driscoll gave the Table Topics Evaluation commenting on what each of the speakers did well.

It fell to Ray Adams to conclude the evaluations with his Grammarian's report, indicating the number of ums and ers and pointing out the word of the evening was used eight times.

With the votes in for Best table Topics and Evaluator Ann invited Ravi to give the General Evaluation. Ravi went through the various roles and in a nice touch asked for a round of applause for each. He commented how in his club they did not have a warm-up but he would take this idea back and introduce it.

Ann now passed over to Keith Oliver as Club President. Keith invited Ravi back to the lectern and presented him with a Spinnaker fridge magnet as a memento of his visit.

Keith now reminded members of the need to attract new members, and also advised we would shortly be seeking volunteers for the incoming Committee.

Michael John Smithson then presented the awards for the evening before asking the guests for their comments, and closing the meeting.

Best Speaker – Brent Crouch

Best Evaluator – Wendy Benson

Best Table Topics – Marie Newman
