The Dark Side of Pulchritude

Following the excitement of the club contests it was back to normal at our second meeting in March.

Simon Roberts opened the meeting as Sergeant at Arms and after the usual pleasantries welcomed Brent Crouch as Toastmaster for the evening.

Brent welcomed all present and in light of the solar eclipse which had taken place the previous Friday explained the theme was The Dark. He invited those present to share their experiences although other than viewing it on the television for most it had been just a darker shade of grey cloud.

He then called on Charlotte O'Driscoll to explain the mysteries of the lights, before asking Steven Okonkwo to come to the lectern as Grammarian. Steven set the word of the evening as 'pulchritude' meaning beauty in view of the fact we were now in Spring, before explaining how he would be looking for good and bad examples of language.

Michael John Smithson was next up as Warm Up Master and he asked the audience what they got out of Toastmasters. Amongst the many positive plaudits were the friendliness of the club, growing confidence and a place to hone their speaking skills.

Brent now moved to the prepared speeches, which tonight were given by Keith Oliver, Wendy Benson and Michael John Smithson.

Keith started with a speech entitled “Who Moved the Cheese?: with an amusing story of how to deal with change. Wendy followed, reappraising a talk by Jane Fonda called “Life's Third Act” on accepting the challenges of old age. Finally Michael John gave two short stories on “Named Animals” the stories being “ A Dog called Sex” and “A Pig named Sam”.

It was now time fort eh break, which as always passed far too quickly.

We returned for the evaluations given by Karen Chapman, Keith Oliver and Ann Carver.

It was now time for more fun as Allan Wadsworth stepped up as Table Topics Master. Allan rose to the challenge of the eclipse and gave a number of astronomical based questions for the participants to grapple over.

It was now time for Steven to give his Grammarian's report in which he highlighted good language such as rhyming and noted the few ums and ers, although the word So seemed to be prevalent.

Having been given time to get her thoughts together Ann Carver was invited to give the table topics evaluation.

Finally it fell to Ray Adams to give his thoughts on the meeting as a whole as General Evaluator.

Keith Oliver then stepped up to give the club business, particularly congratulating Ann Carver on a creditable 3rd place in the Area Speech Contest.

Michael John as always closed the meeting with the awards.
