A PARADIGM OF COURAGE

Despite the cold weather it was another good turn out for our first meeting in February and we were pleased to greet another two guests – Temuulen Odbileg and Andrea Bacon.

Charlotte O'Driscoll opened the meeting with a deft flick of the gavel, before reminding the audience of the arrangements for phones, toilets and fire escape. Carole then welcomed Wendy Benson to the lectern.

Wendy welcomed everyone and explained that the theme for the night was courage, and quoted Winston Churchill who had said Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” An apt quote for Toastmasters.

After explaining the protocols Wendy called on Karen Chapman to explain the role of Timekeeper, before inviting Ann Carver to the lectern as Grammarian. Ann explained her role was to look for filler words and good language. She also set the word of the evening – Paradigm, an example or a framework.

Simon Roberts was next to the lectern with the evening's warm-up which was what courage meant to those present. Various quotes and emotions were explained as well as courage to do speeches, and conquer heights, and of course beer got a mention as well.

Wendy after thanking Simon, moved us on tot e prepared speeches. Each was introduced by their respective evaluator. First up was Ray Adams with his Project No 5 speech entitled “My Journey in Communication”. Steven Okonkwo followed with his Icebreaker speech, “My Icebreaker Speech”, before Keith Oliver concluded with “It Shouldn't Happen to a Toastmaster”,from the Entertaining Speaker Manual about things that had gone wrong in public speaking.

The break followed which was spent in conversation between members and guests, before Charlotte again called us to order.

Wendy Benson called upon the evaluators, Marie Newman,Gavin Meikle and Chris Ellis to do the honours. Three strong evaluations followed highlighting the strengths of each speaker and giving suggestions for improvement.

With the speech evaluations completed Wendy called on Carolyn Barber to lead the impromptu speeches in the Table Topic session. Carolyn set one question for all, which was what lucky mascot, item of clothing or habits give you courage. The six volunteers gave us a variety of answers from wrist bands to mediation and prayer, from walks to just sitting and admiring their garden.

Ann Carver now gave her Grammarian's report commenting on the few ums and ahs used, as well as picking up on some of the fine language used.

Keith Oliver had the task of evaluating the Table Topics and highlighted how each speaker had been able to structure their talks to give meaningful and coherent mini-speeches.

Michael John Smithson gave the General Evaluators talk emphasising the many high points of the meeting.

As the meeting drew to a close Keith Oliver as club President reminded members of the forthcoming Contests, and thanked all who had volunteered early to complete the agenda this time and hoped we could repeat this for our nest meeting.

Michael John handed out the awards, and the customary Spinnaker bag to Steven to mark his Icebreaker speech. He then invited our guests to comment, with both indicating how they enjoyed the meeting.

Best Speaker – Steven Okonkwo

Best Evaluator – Gavin Meikle

Best Table Topics – Ann Carver
