A night of erudite introduction

November finished on a high with a well attended meeting with several guests and some great speeches.

Marie Newman opened the meeting and after welcoming those attending despite the falling temperatures outside, called Keith Oliver as Toastmaster to the lectern. Keith had stood in as Ann Carver was unwell, and Keith was sure all present would wish to convey their best wishes to her for a speedy recovery.

Keith then ran through the Toastmasters programme and protocols for the benefit of members and guests, and impressed on the audience the need to give a rousing applause to those participating.

He now asked Allan Wadsworth to explain the workings of the lights and the necessity to keep to time.

Andy Hammond (Arun Speakers/County Communicators) was next up as Grammarian indicating he would be looking for good and bad language and indicated that the word for the evening was 'erudite' meaning knowledgeable without requiring much preparation.

Keith now presented the warm up, and, noting the recent craze for ice cream parlours, asked those present to inform us of their favourite ice cream flavours, or their best memories. As usual everyone participated and we had a range of ice cream from the traditional to the exotic with memories home and abroad.

With the preliminaries out of the way and everyone in an appropriate mood, we moved to the two prepared speeches. Suzy Slight and Simon Roberts were both doing their Icebreakers. Suzy went first but had not provided a title – so Wendy Benson, picking up on a commentfrom Suzy, christened it “I never came up with a pithy title”. Suzy talked about her career to date, and her interests. Suzy even worked the word of the evening into her speech.

Simon followed with his speech and again had not provided a title in advance but quickly entitled it “It is what it is”. Again Simon gave a brief summary of hs life, career path and reasons for joining Toastmasters.

As we only had the two speakers our network break was slightly longer than usual, but the time flew by and we were duly summoned back by Marie for the second half.

Keith now called on Wendy Benson and Chris Ellis for the respective evaluations which they gave in a supportive and encouraging manner, highlighting the strengthhs of the two speakers, and identifyng areas for improvement in their coming speeches.

Next up was Gavin Meikle with a Table Topics session based on events which had happened on that date in history and asking participants related questions. The answers as ever ranged from the serious to the amusing. Brent Crouch had the job of evaluating the speakers, and again picked up on the good use of structure and language used.

Andy Hammond then retook the stage to give te Grammarian's report, noting the number of times the word of the evening had been used, identifying the use of filler words but also highlighting the good use of language over the evening.

It only remained for michael John to conclude the meeting with a General Evaluation highlighting his view of the evening and giving praise and advice to the participants.

With the main meeting now concluded Keith Oliver, as Club President, reminded members that there wasonly one meeting in December when we would have a social evening on the 8th. He also reminded members of the need to get their Leadership Manuals marked up and to sign up for the mentorship programme. Finally he wished Michael John well on his proposed journey to New Zealand when he hoped to visit Spinnaker Toastmasters.

Michael John then gave out the awards and asked the guests for their omments before closing the meeting.
