Bada-bing - a night to remember

On the night before Armistice Day it was only fitting that our theme pronounced by the Toastmaster of the Evening, Jean Morgan, should be Remembrance.

Keith Oliver opened the meeting on a night when we welcomed three guests to our club, and set out the usual hospitality and the housekeeping rules, before inviting Jean to the lectern.

Jean warmly welcomed everyone and after some initial thoughts called on Suzy Slight, as Timekeeper, to explain the importance of time keeping and the use of the lights. Next Jean asked Chris Ellis as Grammarian to explain is role. Chris explained how he would be looking for good language, and counting ums and ers. He also set the word of the evening “baba-bing” meaning all of a sudden.

Jean now moved us to the prepared speeches given by Gavin Meikle and Wendy Benson. Gavin spoke from the advanced manual – communicating on television - as if speaking to a room of journalists. Having explained his position on the need for managers to be better communicators he then fielded questions from the audience.

Wendy then gave a talk on Top Tips for Table Topics, explaining how, by examples and involving the audience, we can improve our impromptu speaking. In particular we recommended using PREP – make your point, give a reason, provide an example and conclude on your original point.

We now broke for our break, before resuming for the evaluations given by Ann Carver and Michael John Smithson, setting out the strengths of the speakers and suggesting possible areas for improvement.

Jean now asked Marie Newman to lead our Table Topics session. Marie reminded us of the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and how he had sold the cow for a handful of beans. She invited members and guests to select household objects from her bag and explain why they had sold the cow for the objects selected and how it would make them rich.

There followed an array of items such as matches, an umbrella, washing up liquid and mouthwash for individuals to explain themselves.

After the vote for best Table Topics Speaker Keith Oliver had the task of evaluating the speakers, and complimented them on how they had tackled the task and spoken cogently on their chosen items, but also pointed out how they might have added to their speeches.

As the meeting was drawing to a close Jean now invited Brent Crouch to give the General Evaluation. Brent first commented on the layout as we had turned through 90 degrees to previous meetings. This was generally felt preferable to how we had set out the room on previous meetings. He then offered thoughts and advice to those taking on roles throughout the meeting.

Keith Oliver then gave the club business, explaining about the importance of mentoring and on getting their Leadership manuals filled in when undertaking roles.

Finally Michael John presented the awards and sought feedback from our guests.

Best Speaker - Wendy Benson.

Best Evaluator – Ann Carver

Best Table Topics – Gavin Meikle
