Our Blog  (Spinnaker Speakers)
Settling down at the Oasis

We started April at our third venue of 2014 and one which we hope will be our home for the foreseeable future. First impressions were good with a light and airy room, and an adjacent kitchen for the all important teas and coffees. It was good therefore to see a mix of members and guests to usher in this next phase of the Spinnaker story.

It fell to Sheryl Andrews as Sergeant at Arms to welcome us all, acquaint us with the usual housekeeping rules and to introduce our Toastmaster, Keith Oliver.

Keith welcomed all present and set out how the meeting would run and the protocols of hand shaking and clapping for the benefit of the guests. He also briefly described the Toastmaster programme.

He then asked Brent Crouch as Timekeeper to explain the purpose and manner of keeping the meeting to time.

There was no appointed Grammarian so it was back to Sheryl to lead our warm up. Sheryl recounted her recent trip to Egypt and an uncomfortable ride on a camel, before asking us to describe our most uncomfortable rides, tales of roller-coasters, mules, elephants and car accidents followed but the ride of a guest while about to give birth, over cobbles on the way to the hospital probably scored highest.

We only had two speakers but with serendipity one spoke of buying and the other of selling. Ray Adams opened with his 7 principles of buying in “If you're not busy being born you're busy buying! He took us through them from “do I need it?” to trying it before you buy.

Robin Clarke (Solent) followed with a talk to new call centre operatives explaining how to draw in and sell to prospective and existing clients, in his speech entitled “Hard Sell”.

After the obligatory voting we broke for a network break, with Wendy Benson doing the honours in the kitchen.

We returned for the evaluations, given by Elena Grigorieva (Solent) and Michael John Smithson respectively. Our hearts went out to Elena, a Russian for whom English is her second language, trying to understand a Scot but what a great performance she gave.

Keith Oliver next led the Table Topic session picking up on the name of our venue, the Oasis and reflecting on the earlier warm-up of an uncomfortable ride. He explained that the assembled throng was a bus party in Egypt whose bus had broken down a day's walk from the nearest oasis, and asked seven volunteers to explain how we would survive the journey using only an array of unlikely objects. A newspaper, piece of hose, a wire coat hangar, a garden knife and even a plastic bag took on new lives as they suddenly became a means of catching animals, finding water and creating shade.

Robin Clarke did the evaluations of the Table Topics Speakers, before Wendy Benson gave some insights as General Evaluator of the evening.

The evening was drawing to a close as Keith Oliver rounded up with club business, leaving Michael John to hand out the awards. It had been a good meeting and the general view was that we had found an ideal venue.

Best Speaker – Robin Clarke
