Last Loquacity at the Ibis

After four meetings at the Ibis we bade a fond farewell as we looked forward to a new venue in April.

Our new banner took pride of place at the front of the room.

Ros Bristow welcomed us all to the meeting in her role as Sergeant at Arms, and introduced Allan Wadsworth as our Toastmaster for the evening. Allan warmed us up with his thoughts on daffodils and the promise of better weather before introducing his team.

Ray Adams explained the role of Timekeeper before Wendy Benson set the word of the evening “loquacious” meaning talkative, and advised she would be looking out for good and bad language but in particular metaphors and similes.

Robin Clarke then set the warm up in which we had a running story with everyone adding a sentence of two. It started with a trip to Southsea beach, but soon became more incredible and amusing.

Allan then moved us on to the prepared speeches, with Sheryl Andrews up first, doing her Icebreaker “Perception vs Reality”, with the lessons she learnt about herself in talking to her dying mother. Michael Baldwin then gave us a talk on the importance of water with his speech entitled “Inducer”. Finally Wendy Benson read a number of poems with “Live Life” as she continued with her Interpretive Reading manual.

After the vote for best speaker Allan announced the break, during which those present availed themselves of refreshment and good conversation.

Ros called us back to order and Allan called forth the evaluators for the prepared speeches. Brent Crouch, Robin Clarke and Chris Ellis supplied the evaluations, each using the tried and tested 3-2-1 approach, offering encouragement and improvements in equal measure.

After the evaluation it fell to Sue Windell to set the Table Topics and Sue advised that she ran a loft ladder company and was bemused at the odd things people kept in their lofts. There followed a range of items, from tandem bicycles, to hidden alcohol, and prosthetic limbs to fancy dress. The various participants did their best to explain how they had got there.

Michael John Smithson gave the evaluation giving a good resume of the speakers and pointed out what they did well.

Wendy Benson was next up to give her Grammarian report and reported on some ums and ahs, and picked up on some metaphors which had been used. She reported though that the word of the evening had not been used.

Keith Oliver then gave an overview of the meeting as General Evaluator and gave some feedback to the Toastmaster and evaluators.

It now fell to Michael John to hand out the awards, and the grant of a Spinnaker Speakers bag to Sheryl on the occasion of her first speech.

Keith Oliver concluded the meeting with club business, highlighting that members Sue Windell and Gavin Meikle, although representing neighbouring clubs had both done well. Unfortunately Wendy Benson and Robin Chawner representing Spinnaker had not been placed, despite strong performances.

He then announced that this was our last meeting at the Ibis, and invited Wendy Benson to address the audience and disclose our new home. Wendy, who had done most of the leg work, advised that our next meeting would be at the Oasis Centre in Arundel Street, Portsmouth. The facilities were food and the room more commodious to our present home.

Finally Keith Oliver thanked all those present for attending and wished them a safe journey home.
