Dreaming of Success

Our second meeting in March marked our first official International Speech and Evaluation Contest and contestants played to another well attended meeting.

Steven Okonkwo got us under way as Sergeant at Arms, introducing Brent Crouch as our Toastmaster ad Contest Chair of the evening.

Brent welcomed all to the meeting and set out the protocols before introducing our joint Timekeepers and counters, Sheryl Andrews and Ros Bristow.

We moved quickly on to the warm up by Dave Crewe who with some sleight of hand asked everyone what was their unique skill; making food and drink disappear seemed top of individual skills, an unusual swimming style raised some laughter, but the ability to speak Dutch and Flemish was perhaps truly unique amongst those in the room.

We now moved on to the Speech Contest and after Robin Chawner briefed the room on the intricacies of judging our brave contestants stood forward

Ian Millen started with his speech “The Wrong Answer” about history\\'s inventions discovered by mistake, Sue Windell followed with “Sing your own Song” about her singing experiences. Michael Baldwin then spoke of “The Memory” and his recollections of being on safari. Keith Oliver\\'s speech was “It started with a KISS” and the path to setting up Spinnaker Speakers, before Wendy Benson concluded with “Its never too late” about fulfilling your dreams.

After the voting slips were handed in it was time for a brief break before we returned for the second half and the Evaluation Contest.

Allan Wadsworth gave the target speech “To evict or not to evict?”. The three contestants, Wendy Benson, Robin Chawner and Keith Oliver left the room to prepare their evaluations under the watchful eye of Steven Okonkwo.

Ian Millen provided the entertainment with a short Table Topics session before the contestants returned one at a time to evaluate Allan\\'s speech.

While the count was being taken Keith Oliver advised on when and where the Area contest would be, before outlining the situation on the search for a new venue and the charter dinner.

With the votes counted Michael John Smithson handed out the participants\\' certificates before announcing the winners.

International Speech Contest – 1st Wendy Benson, 2nd Ian Millen, 3rd Sue Windell

Evaluation Contest – 1st Robin Chawner.

On what was a successful night we also gained 3 new members – Ray Adams, Ian Millen and Sue Windell .
