Our Blog  (Spinnaker Speakers)
Christmas comes early

Our first and only meeting in December saw a good turnout of members, guests and fellow Toastmasters from neighbouring clubs for our Tall Tales Contest and Xmas social.

The emphasis was on fun and informality and after Michael John opened the proceedings Wendy Benson led us into the Xmas spirit by asking what our worst presents were and our response. Everyone had an amusing tale to tell of unwanted gifts and faux pas, with Sheryl explaining the only way to get the gifts you want is to buy them yourself.

We now moved on to the inter-club Tall Tales contest led by Keith Oliver explaining the intricacies of time and how he keeps the planet moving. Lesley Wells followed with a gothic horror story, and Steve Green (Solent Speakers) brought an up-to-date twist to the old favourite the Christmas Carol. Wendy concluded with how she came face to face with a Yeti. The audience were enthralled and amused in equal measure.

After the judging forms were collected we had an extended break. The tables were groaning under the excellent choice of nibbles and the conversation flowed aided by the coffee and drinks served by our host Richard.

Time was speeding by and it was soon time for the second half.

Brent Crouch led the Table Topics with an array of questions based on memorable Christmases and those we would like to have. Pretty much everyone in the room spoke at some point and again fun was the keyword.

Michael John now had the task of handing out the certificates of participation, followed by the winners awards. Lesley Wells was a justified winner, with Wendy Benson a commendable runner-up. Ann Carver (Arun Speakers) took the honours as Best Table Topics speaker.

Keith Oliver concluded the meeting welcoming two new members, Sheryl Andrews and Dave Crewe, taking us to a point where we could now apply to charter as a fully fledged club. He reminded members the next meeting would be on Monday 13th January before wishing everyone a merry Xmas.
