Musical Harmony

We were honoured to host the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Councillor Lynne Stagg, to our meeting on 25 November
when members and guests were out in force.

Wendy Benson was our Toastmaster for the evening and set the theme as Music indicating that her role was
like a conductor of an orchestra, introducing the various parts at the right time and ending up with a smooth performance. Timing is critical and Jordan Davis, who with Steven Okonkwo joined on the night, explained his role as Timekeeper.

Antonia Harrison followed describing the role of Grammarian and giving the word of the evening as 'Harmony'.

Elena Grigorieva started us off with the warm up, advising her mother's remedy to prevent colds by putting
mustard in your socks. Others were asked for their own ways of avoiding the winter's colds and flus. Fresh air, exercise, alcohol
and avoiding ill people featured prominently.

Michael John started the prepared speeches with a presentation to the Lord Mayor, concluding with the presentation of a portrait he had painted of her, which the mayor graciously accepted.

Allan Wadsworth followed with a number 5 speech entitled “Treading the Boards” describing his foray into the world of amateur dramatics, which entertained and amused the audience.

The Lord Mayor then gave some thoughts on public speaking, highlighting the need to know your audience, to be yourself and keeping to time.

Due to a full agenda the networking break was squeezed but there was plenty of time to mingle and to admire Michael John's painting.

Wendy got the second half started with the evaluations ably provided by Tim Rampton, Brent Crouch and Robin Chawner.

The meeting now moved on to TableTopics set by Keith Oliver, on the theme of “If I ruled the world..”. Ian Millen set out his aims if elected to be Mayor of Portsmouth, with an passionate plea to keep shipbuilding in the city, Brent then took on the role of Prime Minister, promising to sack all politicians. Lynne Stagg as the Queen advised that honours would be given to the many unsung volunteers who keep our city and country running without the credit they deserve, and finally Ken Amy of
Hamwic Speakers took on the role of Police Commissioner aiming to re-establish the moral of the police officers.

Antonia gave the Grammarian's report picking up on the use of good language and the use of the word of the evening. Chris Ellis followed with an evaluation of the Table Topics speakers, picking up on the good things they each did.

With the meeting now drawing to a close Jenny Green of County Communicators gave the general Evaluation expressing how enjoyable she had found the meeting and giving helpful tips to several of the participants.

Michael John gave out the awards Best Speaker – Lynne Stagg, Best Evaluator – Tim Rampton and Best Table Topics Speaker – Ian Millen.

Keith Oliver concluded the meeting reminding those present of our Xmas social on 9 December when we would host a Tall tales contest, and looking forward to the new year. He then invited comments from our guests before closing the meeting.
