Is it really a year first we first started Spinnaker Speakers? Over the past year there have been many
highs but not to many lows, and so it was with confidence we met to celebrate our first birthday.
It was a packed house as members and guests joined us to share our celebrations. Keith Oliver was
Toastmaster for this auspicious evening, and was supported by Pat Tunstall on lights and Michael John Smithson as Grammarian. Michael John set the word of the evening as “inchoate” meaning partly formed.
Keith punctuated the meeting with quotes based on the words, one, first and single.
We got underway with an Icebreaker speech from Chris Ellis, which was followed by Brent Crouch who in
his No 7 speech showed his research on cars. Wendy Benson concluded with a speech giving top tips for table topics, reminding us of the need to consider these as a mini speech and to have structure.
It was time for the networking break which was done with photographs and birthday cake, befitting the occasion.
After the break we moved to the evaluations by Steve Green, Robin Chawner and Jewels Carter, before
the Table Topics set by Allan Wadsworth who gave various questions based on the sun, the moon and lights of all kinds.
Keith Oliver provided the evaluations for the Table Topics, before Michael John gave his Grammarian's
report.
It then fell to John Tunstall, deputy area governor, to give the General Evaluation, before Michael John
gave out the awards.
Keith concluded the meeting with some club business and thanking all for making this such a memorable
night.
