Sultry in Southsea

On a warm sticky night we gathered for our second meeting in July.

Kaye Crush welcomed everyone to the meeting before calling Michael John Smithson to the lectern as Toastmaster.  After dispensing with the preliminaries Michael John then asked Allan Wadsworth to explain the role of timekeeper and then
Keith Oliver gave an introduction to his role as Grammarian. He set the work of the night as “sultry”, reflecting the temperature, and made sure it was used by getting everyone to repeat it.

Gavin Meikle took the warm-up, again reflecting the temperature outside as he asked how people kept cool – cool drinks, and dips in the pool were favoured, and Kaye indicated that to keep cool you should keep your cool which was a clever play on words.

We now moved to speeches. Allan Wadsworth was first up with his No 3 speech when he discussed which was the most versatile room in the house. Wendy Benson gave us another enthralling story based on the evictions in Shetland in the
late 19th century before Zoe Hoy with her No 3 speech asked “Is your job rewarding” and told how she had recently got
her dream job.

There was now opportunity for a network break and to enjoy some cool drinks.

After the break it fell to Brent Crouch, Gavin Meikle and Adrian Reed to give the evaluations, which they did in various styles, but gave several tips for improvements based on their own experiences and using examples.

Wendy Benson set the Table Topics asking about favourite meals, ideal dinner guest, favourite destinations, best job, how to spend a weekend and ideas for a book.

The meeting was now drawing to a  close and Keith summed up the language of the night in his Grammarian's report, emphasising how few ers and ums there had been, before giving the General Evaluation.

Michael John handed out the awards before asking Gavin to speak about changes to the Toastmaster education programme. Gavin advised Toastmasters were reviewing the present programme and materials and he had been appointed to get
feedback along the south coast. In particular he asked members about the club and use of manuals.

Keith Oliver closed the meeting with club business emphasising the upcoming club socials.

Winners on the night were: Best Speaker – Wendy Benson; Best Evaluator – Adrian Reed; Best Table Topics –
Adrian Reed
