Here at Solent speakers it’s not all hard work preparing for meetings, writing speeches and evaluating anything that moves, as some of the group took time out to relax. Though it is fair to say that it might not have been hard work but it was certainly murder....
Some of the usual suspects were whisked back to the ‘70s as they attended a murder mystery night at the Groundling’s theatre in Portsmouth. After discovering that this former school was the oldest theatre and most haunted building in the area it seemed fitting to find that the history of such sayings as “getting the sack” was lived here. Then came the drama.
The old theatre had been transformed into Fawlty Towers, with its own Brasil, Civil, Migel and even the hamster-rat (that fans of the original show will remember). As food was served in keeping with the hotel, the cast battled to hide the bodies and evade the guests working out who did it. The clues were subtle but there.
Our very own Gavin Meikle penned an entertaining limerick and John Webber came second in the detective stakes by blaming Margret Thatcher – on the grounds that everyone else does. All in all a fun night and the only thing to really get murdered was a Spanish accent.
