Would you like to develop your speaking skills? Do you need to make a presentation at work or attend an interview? Perhaps address a school assembly or lead a team meeting? Maybe you need to make a wedding speech or give a vote of thanks? Do you look at confident communicators and think "I wish I could do that?" and wonder if it is possible for you? We have good news, it is!

South West Speakers is part of Toastmasters International and our vision is to inspire, equip and increase your personal confidence in public speaking whether you are a complete beginner or a more experienced speaker or presenter. Our members begin by following a progressive communication and leadership program which provides practice in developing essential skills in public speaking and leadership.  At South West Speakers learning is self-paced to suit your goals and feedback is always very supportive.  Come along to a meeting and find out more.

About Our Club

South West Speakers is a warm and friendly club, a fact that is confirmed time and time again by visitors, guests and new members.

We meet at 7.15pm on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at Jury's Inn, Exeter.

We are always happy to welcome guests who may just want to see what we do and delighted when fellow Toastmasters drop in when in our area.

Richard Warburton

President 2019-20

About Toastmasters

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced programme allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

  • A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.
  • There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.
  • We use the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

    • The opportunity to build  up to 300 unique competencies
    • 10 specialized learning paths to choose from
    • Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere
    • Real-world, transferable skills

One thing that you'll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first you'll be applauded for your effort; later you'll be applauded for your skill.
