About Our Club

Welcome to Aylesbury Speakers’ Club.

Who are we?  Aylesbury Speakers is the longest running toastmasters club in England and Wales – how’s that for a record?    Originally the Club was set up to improve the employability of the workforce in the local area and that remains as relevant today as it did 60 years ago.

How else can it help you?   Do you dread giving appraisals or giving feedback at work?  Do those presentations just fill you with an uncomfortable feeling beforehand and do you somehow feel you simply are not getting the message across?   All your communication skills will be enhanced with Aylesbury Speakers.  You will also find another additional and important bonus, you will find yourself communicating well with family and friends.

At the Club you will meet people from all walks of life who have had their own personal journey with Aylesbury Speakers.  The Club is well known for being friendly and supportive, and for producing great results.

Eddie's Journey
I was asked to speak at the Managing Director’s meeting of the Top 200 managers.
I had to talk for between 6-8 minutes followed by 3-4 minutes of Q & A. I had to do this consecutively 4 times knowing that one of the performances was going to be filmed and put on the company intranet for people to watch later.
I wasn’t allowed notes or presentation aids and I had to stand on a plinth in the atrium of a hotel while 50 senior managers at a time stood in front of me.
I’m not making it up when I say that somebody rang an old fashioned school bell to signal the start and end of the speech, followed by a blast of a dog whistle to let the paddle person (someone whose sole job that day was to lead senior managers to the people giving speeches) know when to move the senior leaders on to the next presentation.
Thanks to my Toastmasters training, I had my speech written and rehearsed, knew how to overcome my nerves and I knew to check for noise sources and overcome them, in this case a photographer snapping away from different angles. I even checked beforehand that the plinth was stable and knew to keep my feet planted as there wasn’t much room to move.
On the third delivery of the speech, I also had to be mic’d up to be filmed. An Olympic Gold medallist who ran a corporate motivational company observed my speech having given the keynote presentation.
The end result was that the Managing Director subsequently mentioned the speech three times when we got back into the main auditorium (having apparently watched me twice) and subsequently wrote me a personal email thanking me for the speech.
Two other directors also wrote to the head of my department praising me, as did the Head of Communications saying it was a fabulous speech and that I was a great ambassador for my department.
I couldn’t have done it without Toasmasters guiding me, encouraging me and giving me feedback so thank you very much indeed.

     I joined the Aylesbury Speakers club to help me overcome a fear of public speaking that I had since I was about 10 years old, which during my teens had become a phobia making my life a misery and causing me a lot of problems at school.  I avoided having to speak in class at all costs and more than once went absent for that reason!  I continued to struggle with public speaking through my working life.  Recently my job had changed to one where I would be expected to make presentations, give talks and lead discussions, and having been so nervous that I made a hash of a presentation in front of my manager, I decided that something had to be done!  I found Aylesbury Speakers Club on the internet and arranged to visit as a guest.  I was given a warm welcome and everyone was very friendly.  There was no pressure on me to join but encouragement to visit again as a guest, and join when I was ready.

     After becoming a member in early 2011, I was given the Competent Communication manual which has 10 speaking assignments designed to teach people public speaking skills.  I was extremely nervous when making my first speech, but everyone was so encouraging that I was able to continue with further assignments in the manual.  I have slowly become less nervous and more confident when making a speech, and learnt a lot about how to speak in public.  For example, organising my speech; making eye contact with the audience; using appropriate body language to reinforce the message; varying my voice instead of talking monotonously; and using visual aids.  

My manager at work has noticed my increased confidence in public speaking and is very pleased!  It has been a great help when I have needed to speak in front of a group of people at work, and I notice that I have started to use the skills I have learnt at the club in other settings.

I have recently finished the 10 assignments in the Competent Communication manual, and I know that this has helped me a great deal and other members have told me that my speaking skills are improving with every speech that I make.  Now I'm looking forward to starting the advanced manuals.
