Overcoming barriers to better communication.
The story of how Toastmasters membership helped our past president Damien Lynch DTM.
As a young person in school, I was always interested in communication, then representing my alma mater in secondary school debating around the City. What really sparked my interest further was a guest from a local Toastmasters Club demonstrating the power of effective public speaking. I have to say the man in question was a pleasure to listen to and only new to Toastmasters. He explained to us that we would progress gently in a warm, friendly and supportive manner, make new friends and boost our confidence levels. It sounded good to me.
I remember thinking that this skill could help everyone in their everyday life, work, and social occasions as well. I was too young at 17 to join but I kept it in mind. There and then, I resolved to join Toastmasters as soon as I could, but a thing called life got in the way and it was a number of years before I had my opportunity.
The opportunity happened in the work place. I was working and living in the United States at this time and communication in the workplace was critical to career development. I was working as a financial advisor for a large Stockbroking firm and the ability to convey information and educate the clientele on the intricacies of the market place required special skill. The firm I worked for insisted that all advisors join Toastmasters to help them in their jobs. I can only say that it did, the ability to speak with confidence in front of crowds of people can only help you in your job, at a wedding, or making a presentation, and is becoming increasingly essential today.
That was fifteen years ago. Since then, my communication skills have changed for the better. I have gained skills in leadership and improved my confidence immeasurably. Since joining Toastmasters I have gone through a structure of developing from an Ice Breaker speech (the first one presented by any new member) through to becoming a confident speaker, Toastmasters has helped me so much in the area of communication, that I offer coaching in the subject.
I feel very confident now as a communicator because of the friendly, supportive environment Toastmasters provides and I am no longer worried when asked to “say a few words”
Again, all of the changes to this aspect of my life have occurred gradually in a safe friendly and supportive setting and I've managed to have a lot of fun in the process. I could not recommend Toastmasters highly enough.
Thank you Toastmasters.
