Cheltenham Speakers – Grammarian Guidance

Before the Meeting:

  • Choose a word of the day & print it (at least A4 size with big letters).

  • Have a list of speakers ready, with space to add Table Topic speakers.

  • Have an idea of how to format your report (only the highlights, each speaker?)

At the Meeting:

  • Attach the word of the day at the back of the stage area (behind and off to the side of the centre of the speaking area, ensuring it is visible to all).

Introducing the Role:

  • Introduce the word of the day & its meaning. Use it in a sentence.

  • Mention that you will report back on grammar at the end of the meeting.

During the Meeting:

  • Look for and note the following:

    • Use of rhetorical devices such as alliteration, similes & metaphors, repetition.

    • Interesting words, particularly impactful language.

    • Common and easy to correct mistakes (amount vs number, fewer vs less etc)

  • Be wary of the 3 minute time limit

  • Don’t try to provide a comment for everyone if time is tight.
