Grammarian

. GRAMMARIAN - ROLE INTRODUCTION

The Grammarian has three duties which, in order of priority, are:

  • Firstly to report on interesting, unusual or effective uses of speech and also on any grammatical errors or "inappropriate" use such as bad language.

  • Secondly, to set a "word of the day" and report on it's use - Ideally a word that is not in everyday use, but avoiding the obscure or unpronounceable.

  • Thirdly, to report on hesitations (Um's and Ah's) where they distract from the speaker's message.

2. ACTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • If, through extreme and unavoidable circumstances, you find that you are unable to carry out this role you will need to find a replacement. Please liaise with the Chairperson in finding a suitable replacement.

3. GRAMMARIAN - THE ROLE
Preparation

Before the meeting choose a word-of-the-day and produce four or five posters with the word displayed sufficiently largely to be legible to those attending the meeting. Bring these with you together with blu-tack or sticky-tape to attach them to the walls, windows or furniture in the room.

At The Meeting

  • After your introduction by the Chairman, explain the role of the Grammarian and announce the word-of-the-day giving it's meaning and some examples of it's use.

  • Listen carefully to all of the speakers and report your findings when called upon by the Chairman towards the end of the meeting.

Notes and Tips

  • Although Grammarian is often seen as a minor role, it is a serious speaking opportunity which can make an important contribution to the meeting.

  • Do not attempt to record all of the Um's and Ah's as this would take intense concentration and is rather less important than picking up effective uses of language.

  • Finally, if you have not completed your Competent Leadership Award and still need this role signed-up you should: (A) give your CL manual to another London Athenians member before the meeting starts with the required role identified and ask her/him to complete the required section; and (B) ensure you cover all of the objectives of the selected CL Project during your performance of the role.
