Announcement: Powertalk is a superclub!
Posted: BobbyBuck @ 17 Jul 18, 15:49

At yesterday's Division  training for the new incoming club committees held in Maldron hotel in Clondalkin, 30/06 2018  it was an obvious observation  , maybe a little too obvious that the superclub Powertalk plays a great role in the education of the many advanced Toastmasters in our Division M. Yesterday the magisterial Teresa Redmond , the new in coming Division M director paid tribute to the searching...

Powertalk meeting   16th July 2018.

At Powertalk’ Toastmasters summer meeting in 51 Haddington the cream of Dublin’s “toasties” came to speak, espouse and engage in rapid repartee. Colm MCGlade was Toastmaster for the evening and sprinkled the meeting throughout with wise quips on Speechcraft.  Like “A great speech is based on preparation”.

Announcement: Powertalk Club Objectives
Posted: Brendan Haughton @ 25 Jan 17, 11:33

Powertalk welcomes all Toastmasters and prospective Toastmasters. It especially welcomes members who have reached at least Stage 6 in the CC and higher. It is NOT an elite Club; it is a Community Club which promotes higher levels of achievement among its members; it is welcoming of all, and especially of guests.

Meeting 16th July 2018.

Winifred Ryan, Rathfarnham, after an absence of 4 years from the podium came with a well prepared speech presentation on how to sell a product. Winifred, by her powers of description, had her audience at The Ideal Homes exhibition in the RDS. Her desired object of sale, A Ryan Bespoke table became a dream, a future memory in the weave of family life. Her evaluator John Hennessy was totally sold on the Ryan crafted table and felt that at 20,000 Euros it was a mere snip. We Powertalk Toastmasters were offered a 10% cut.

The 2nd speech was a master class by Chris O’Byrne, Engineers, master storyteller on how, when and where to move in a space when giving a speech. We had timelines, marking events even epochs, three at most with segues in a speaker’s life. We had   the comparison of the stage to the reading of a page in a book. We had the most effective way to achieve dialogue. With just a mere turn of the head Chris had us convinced that two characters were in a conversation  and then came magically  forward out of the conversation to become the speaker once more. This speech is what Powertalk Toastmasters is all about where the great speakers share their knowledge and expertise with their colleagues. Chris’s evaluation became a lively debate between all those present .The argument swung between the fixity and security of the podium and the freedom and communicative power that the moving purposeful speaker offers to his audience. Bobby Buckley, the Evaluator argued for the need of the lectern still. Dermot Carey, the evaluator’s evaluator quite wisely spoke of the freedom that is now offered by modern sound technology to the modern speaker. The debate will go on, I am sure.

Powertalk has the best mid- break Toastmaster food! Come and try it. All for a contribution to the “honesty” jar. You could miss your tea at home and be well fed after this food.

The able Topicsmaster was P.J. Claffey and the contributions became a free fall into hilarity, wisdom and at times inspired madness. Aine Ni Ghlinn spoke for 59.24 seconds on the “nothingness” of a blank page. Dermot Carey was charmingly scathing on modern coffee culture. I gained a new insight into all those coffee drinkers in our cafes. Colm MCGlade and Chris O’Byrne both told remarkable personal stories on the topic that every cloud has a silver lining. Aine, Winifred and John each spoke humbly, wittily on the solutions to Ireland’s problems while Dermot and John despite being wary of “The Rose of Tralee” festival , both being men I suppose, still thought it deserves some praise . What would the feminists think? The topics session ended with PJ indulging Bobby on their mutual love of athletics and their joy at the rise of another generation of Irish talent.

The next Powertalk session will resume the bracing fun on 20th August next. Why not be there?
